Community Outreach Manager Hostelling International – New York
Hostelling International USA is looking for a talented Community Outreach Manager to connect the HI-New York hostel with the greater New York community. The successful candidate must have experience and be comfortable operating in both the online and offline worlds, using strategies from both to create a vibrant community among adventurous travelers. Engaging high impact volunteers will be an essential component of your success.
The position is full-time, fast paced, and dynamic with wide ranging responsibilities and projects that will keep you motivated and challenged. It will involve non-traditional work days/weeks (i.e., it’s not a 9-5 job).
Responsibilities
- Create and implement innovative online and offline methods for connecting hostellers at HI-New York with the greater New York community
- Develop and implement public relations strategies to build a dynamic, interactive community among adventurous travelers and raise the profile of HI-USA in the New York area
- Build collaborative partnerships with local organizations to expand mission impact for both hostellers and the community
- Develop a plan for hostel access, use, and programming by the local community members that will be beneficial to hostellers
- Work closely with hostel operations staff for effective hostel use and expanded opportunities for interactions between hostellers and community members
- Partner with Hostel Activities Coordinator for successful volunteer opportunities and visiting hosteller involvement.
- Establish and maintain relationships with local press, government, and community groups helping to inform and promote our mission
- Track, analyze and report on the impact of the initiative
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Demonstrated interest and experience, and high degree of comfort with online communications and social networking media
- Excellent computer, software and database skill; internet savvy
- Five or more years of organizing creative social interaction
- Community organizing experience
- Volunteer engagement experience preferably in educational or cultural institutions
- Appreciation for Intercultural Understanding
- Ability to balance multiple tasks in a busy environment
- Self-directed with ability to work with a team
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Positive attitude, commitment to constructive communication and cooperation, demonstrated team/group work skills
- Hospitality and/or hostelling experience helpful
- Experienced Free and Independent Traveler

Hostel Assistant II at HI - Pescadero - Pigeon Point Lighthouse
The Pigeon Point Lighthouse Hostel has 59 beds in dormitory style and private rooms. The hostel serves 12,000 educational and recreational travelers annually, and is home to an environmental education program for school children that operates six months a year.
Responsibilities
- Welcome, register, orient, and supervise guests.
- Maintain security and safety of the hostel and personal belongings of guests.
- Represent Hostelling International USA, the hostel, and California State Parks in a positive manner to guests, callers, local officials, and the general public.
- Provide information about HI-USA, the hostel, and the local area to guests in person, over the phone, via email, and in writing.
- Collect and accurately record overnight fees and sales of goods.
- Assign and supervise daily housekeeping chores.
- Clean hostel buildings including daily chores and deep cleaning.
- Additional duties include: building maintenance, bookkeeping, reservations, gardening, lighthouse tours, hot tub maintenance, inventory, stocking, and supplies purchasing.
- Provide on-call assistance in emergencies any time while on the hostel premises.
- Actively support the mission and goals of HI-USA.
- Other duties assigned by the Hostel General Manager.
Qualifications
- Must have customer service experience and enjoy working with the public.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Experience handling cash and credit cards, and recording sales transactions.
- Accurate, neat, and thorough record-keeping.
- House and/or hospitality cleaning experience.
- Conflict resolution skills and ability to act effectively in a crisis.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively without immediate supervision.
- Must be flexible regarding work schedule; working evenings, early mornings, overnight on-call duty, holidays, and weekends may be required.
- First aid and CPR certification preferred (training can be provided).
- Computer skills (word processing, email, hospitality registration, and database management) desirable.
- Hostelling experience desirable.
Reports to: Hostel General Manager
Salary, Benefits, and Hours
32-40 hours per week. Housing may be provided. The wage range is $8.00 - $8.50 per hour for live-in, or $9.50 - $10.00 per hour if living off site. Liberal benefits include vacation, holiday, and sick pay, as well as health, dental, vision, chiropractic, and acupuncture insurance.

Director of Finance and Administration
HI-USA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that fosters intercultural understanding with its network of youth hostels in the United States and its educational programs. It has an annual operating budget of $18 million and a national headquarters staff of 20, with 160 other employees based out of four (4) gateway youth hostels directly developed and managed by the national organization.
Basic function:
Responsible for oversight of day-to-day financial reporting and strategic financial leadership.
Responsibilities
- Provide direction and oversight of the accounting functions including establishing and monitoring internal controls.
- Develop and implement the annual operating budget in coordination with department directors and executive staff team.
- Oversee preparation of monthly GAAP financial statements.
- Implement and ensure compliance with the organization’s investment policies.
- Staff the financial strategy and information needs of the CEO. Prepare quarterly financial reports for the national board of directors and provide other general support, including attending quarterly and other board meetings.
- Provide to the CEO on a monthly basis budget analysis and financial review of consolidated financial results, including identification of variances and trends. Coordinate with the CEO the executive staff team review and analysis of quarterly consolidated financial results.
- Actively participate in the regular meetings of the executive staff team.
- Oversee self-insured risk management program for the national office and local councils including marketing of insurance policies and coordination of legal counsel services.
- Oversee the human resources, information technology and office management functions.
- Maintain compliance with all federal, state, and local government filing and reporting requirements.
- Oversee annual audit/tax return preparation and act as liaison for national board audit committee.
- Establish and maintain relationships with financial institutions.
- Coordinate real estate transactions with Director of Hostels.
- Represent owner interests in relationships with joint venture partners, in coordination with the Director of Organizational Development.
- Monitor and maintain trademark registrations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum 10 years supervisory experience with focus on accounting or finance/business.
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Nonprofit experience highly preferred.
- CPA preferred.
- Exposure to real estate and complex organizational structures helpful.
- Exposure to Historic and New Markets Tax Credits helpful.
Skills:
Analyze and organize financial data; establish plans and set objectives that support financial goals; identify problems, evaluate alternatives, and implement effective solutions; communicate effectively; and plan, assign, and/or supervise the work of others effectively. Also must possess excellent computer skills.
