Train

BY AMTRAK RAIL: From the Oakland or Emeryville Amtrak stations, take an Amtrak shuttle bus to the Ferry Building (at Market Street and the Embarcadero). Take a MUNI metro train from the Embarcadero station (near the Ferry Building) to the Civic Center station. Exit the station using the UN Plaza exit. Walk across the plaza towards City Hall (the large domed building) and turn right on Larkin Street. Walk 5 blocks north on Larkin, then turn right on Ellis Street. The hostel is the first building on the righthand side.

Parking

There is an unloading zone in front of the hostel entrance; when you arrive, the hostel staff can direct you to a long-term parking facility 3 blocks from the hostel ($14/day).

4 blocks from Civic Center Plaza; walking distance to Union Square, Chinatown, SoMA, and cable cars.

Bus

BY GREYHOUND BUS: The bus stops at the Transbay Terminal in San Francisco. Walk out to the front of the terminal and take MUNI bus #38 to Geary and Larkin streets. Walk 2 blocks south on Larkin to Ellis Street and turn left. The hostel is on the righthand side.

Airport

HI-San Francisco City Center, operated by the Golden Gate Council of Hostelling International USA, is seeking a seasonal part-time Front Desk Associate / Breakfast Server. A nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting intercultural exchange, environmental stewardship, and world peace through hostelling, the Council operates a network of eight hostels around Northern California, and also provides outdoor and intercultural educational programs for youth.
HI-San Francisco City Center is a 222- to 272-bed hostel (depending upon the season) near the Civic Center in San Francisco. Our hostel is located in a beautiful 1920s hotel building, and features small dormitories, en suite bathrooms, charming common spaces, a fully equipped kitchen, and continental breakfast. We maintain a warm and welcoming boutique hostel with a high level of service and many little touches to make our guests feel special. HI-San Francisco City Center has received numerous awards for customer satisfaction and quality standards.
The main priority of all employees is the safety and comfort of our guests. The Front Desk Associate / Breakfast Server position is a hybrid between reception and food service, however both aspects of the position focus on ensuring excellent customer service to our guests. This position is responsible for providing a welcoming atmosphere and ensuring guest and public contact runs smoothly and efficiently.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a representative of HI-USA and its goals in a positive and professional manner.
  • Make guests feel welcome and provide friendly and excellent service.
  • Deal with difficult situations calmly and professionally.
  • Follow procedures in response to emergencies and act quickly to resolve time-sensitive issues.
  • Maintain security and safety in the building, and enforce hostel policies.
  • Accurate registration of guests in property management system.
  • Process reservation requests, cancellations, and changes (via phone, internet, or email).
  • Maintain appearance at reception and breakfast area: organize work area, keep common areas clean and clear, stock supplies.
  • Work in conjunction with Activities Coordinator and management staff to promote and facilitate all hostel events.
  • Handle money accurately.
  • Maintain a full and attractive display of food, coffee, etc. during breakfast hours.
  • Order food service products weekly.
  • Light cleaning, washing dishes, wiping down tables, sweeping, etc.
  • This position requires the physical ability to perform any task associated with the operation of the hostel.
  • Other duties assigned by hostel management staff.

Qualifications

  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Computer literacy
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • High school diploma
  • First-aid certification or willingness to become certified
  • Service/hospitality or related experience
  • Ability to climb stairs and access top bunk beds in order to assist guests in case of emergency
  • Positive attitude and sense of humor
  • Ability to be flexible with scheduling
  • Availability to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays

Reports to: Front Desk Manager

Salary, Benefits, and Hours

Part time, averaging 20-30 hours per week. This is a seasonal (temporary), hourly, non-exempt position.
Starting wage is $11 per hour.
In cases where seasonal employment becomes permanent, employees will be offered a benefits package including paid vacation and holidays, accrued sick leave, as well as medical, dental, vision, chiropractic, and acupuncture insurance.
