11. Membership

Hostelling International is a non-profit membership organization promoting international understanding and peace though hostelling since 1909. To maintain our ability to offer low-budget accommodations we charge additional fees to non-members.

However, a FREE Group Membership is available to US groups. A group membership entitles everyone in the group to member rates. You must be the group leader of an organized, US based group of 10 or more people in order to apply for a free group membership.

Community Outreach Manager at HI - New York City

Hostelling International USA is looking for a talented Community Outreach Manager to connect the HI-New York hostel with the greater New York community. The successful candidate must have experience and be comfortable operating in both the online and offline worlds, using strategies from both to create a vibrant community among adventurous travelers. Engaging high impact volunteers will be an essential component of your success.

The position is full-time, fast paced, and dynamic with wide ranging responsibilities and projects that will keep you motivated and challenged. It will involve non-traditional work days/weeks (i.e., it’s not a 9-5 job).

Responsibilities

  • Create and implement innovative online and offline methods for connecting hostellers at HI-New York with the greater New York community
  • Develop and implement public relations strategies to build a dynamic, interactive community among adventurous travelers and raise the profile of HI-USA in the New York area
  • Build collaborative partnerships with local organizations to expand mission impact for both hostellers and the community
  • Develop a plan for hostel access, use, and programming by the local community members that will be beneficial to hostellers
  • Work closely with hostel operations staff for effective hostel use and expanded opportunities for interactions between hostellers and community members
  • Partner with Hostel Activities Coordinator for successful volunteer opportunities and visiting hosteller involvement.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with local press, government, and community groups helping to inform and promote our mission
  • Track, analyze and report on the impact of the initiative
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated interest and experience, and high degree of comfort with online communications and social networking media
  • Excellent computer, software and database skill; internet savvy
  • Five or more years of organizing creative social interaction
  • Community organizing experience
  • Volunteer engagement experience preferably in educational or cultural institutions
  • Appreciation for Intercultural Understanding
  • Ability to balance multiple tasks in a busy environment
  • Self-directed with ability to work with a team
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Positive attitude, commitment to constructive communication and cooperation, demonstrated team/group work skills
  • Hospitality and/or hostelling experience helpful
  • Experienced Free and Independent Traveler

Salary, Benefits, and Hours

Salary will be commensurate with experience.
