Hostelling International is a non-profit membership organization promoting international understanding and peace though hostelling since 1909. To maintain our ability to offer low-budget accommodations we charge additional fees to non-members.

However, a FREE Group Membership is available to US groups. A group membership entitles everyone in the group to member rates. You must be the group leader of an organized, US based group of 10 or more people in order to apply for a free group membership.

Hostelling International – New York General Manager at HI - New York City

To maximize memorable hostel-stay experiences through progressive leadership and management of all hostel operations and staff. The position oversees the creation, execution, and review of employee management programs, safety programs, marketing plans, budgets, sales activities, expense controls, property maintenance, and security.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the budgeting and expenses of the hostel and the priorities that evolve through budgeting.
  • Prepare financial statements, periodic forecasts and budget review to ensure timely, accurate, and useful information.
  • Maintain an engaged and fun-filled workplace, encouraging imagination and creativity.
  • Develop trust and improve interpersonal communications and relationships.
  • Maintain proactive human resources to ensure employee motivation, training and development, wage/benefit administration and compliance with policies and procedures and labor regulations.
  • Hire, train and provide career development for subordinates; conduct performance evaluations and provide feedback to subordinates. Supervise management team.
  • Oversee the guest services and reservation functions to ensure superior guest service and grow overnights.
  • Monitor product quality standards in all areas of the hostel as it relates to the appearance, levels of maintenance and cleanliness; ensure that preventative maintenance programs are in place to protect the physical assets of the hostel.
  • Oversee creation and implementation of hosteller-oriented activities and programs; build solid relationships with community partners to expand on these opportunities.
  • Measure the effectiveness of yield management efforts to maximize the number of market segments reached, effectively set rates, and to diversify sources of revenues.
  • Monitor bed inventory with reservations and group sales, develop selling strategies to maximize room revenue.
  • Oversee third-party contract services and tenant leases to ensure standards of operation and quality are maintained while profits are maximized.
  • Oversee security and safety protocols to ensure a safe and secure environment for guests, employees, and hostel assets.
  • Assist Senior Management in the development, implementation and monitoring of financial and operational plans for the hostel which support the overall objectives of the organization; make recommendations and monitor progress with capital improvements that enhance the assets of the company and brand loyalty.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience

Bachelor's degree (B. A./ B.S.) from four-year college or university; and six to eight years related hospitality management experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
