More Information
From the sandy beaches of the Outer Banks to the Great Smoky Mountains, North Carolina offers an amazing variety of adventures and activities. Pembroke, North Carolina is home to the University of North Carolina – Pembroke, as well as the tribal seat of the Lumbee Indian Tribe, the ninth largest tribe in the United States. The Pembroke hostel is located in this small, historic town that celebrates its Native American heritage with several annual events. The Lumbee Homecoming, held in late June through early July, is an annual time of reflection and togetherness, while the play Strike at the Wind is performed every Friday and Saturday in July and August. Pembroke’s Native American Resource Center is renowned for its exhibits of authentic Native American artifacts, arts, and crafts, focusing on the Lumbee Tribe. The nearby Lumber River, a blackwater river perfect for canoeing and fishing, is nestled among scenic cypress-gum swamps and hardwood forests. Pembroke is about two hours driving time from North Carolina beaches, Raleigh, Wilmington, and Myrtle Beach.
