Board Service

Call for Candidates

The Board Development Committee of Hostelling International USA seeks candidates to serve important leadership roles as members of the HI-USA Board of Directors beginning in March, 2014.  Fifteen Directors will be selected by Board election at the current Board’s December meeting, to be seated in March, 2014.  Four At-Large Directors will be chosen in a separate process by vote of HI-USA members in February, 2014, also to be seated at the March meeting.

HI-USA is a $45 million 501c(3) nonprofit organization committed to advancing intercultural understanding through hostel stays and programming.  It serves people of all ages, but its target audience is 18 to 30-year olds.  With 460 employees, 33 owned and managed hostels, and 21 affiliate hostels throughout the US, it is one of 80 national members of Hostelling International, which has more than 3500 hostels worldwide.

HI-USA is completing its first major reorganization in over fifty years, consolidating from a group of more than 30 local councils across the country to a single unified organization.  The 2014 Board will be the first governing body of the new organization.

The HI-USA Board of Directors meets four times each year for two-day weekend sessions in various locations around the country and convenes by teleconference between quarterly meetings as required to address urgent or time sensitive issues. The Board utilizes the Policy Governance model to conduct its business and to interact with the CEO. The standard term for Board service is three years.
