20 December 2018

If the winter blues are getting to be a bit too much for you this year, we’ve got good news! There are a few fabulous winter sun destinations you can visit for a few days of blissful escape, and you don’t have to go very far (like to southern hemisphere) or break the bank to get there. Lie on the beach, hike up a hill, make friends with fellow sun-chasers - you can have a slice of summer at these HI USA warm winter destinations.

San Diego, CA

The beaches! That’s probably the best reason to visit San Diego when you’re trying to replenish your Vitamin D. The weather is nice and comfortable year ‘round, and there are plenty of excellent beaches to choose from, so you can plan a few good days of roaming the SoCal city eating tacos and lazing on the sand.

Where to stay: Stay at HI San Diego Point Loma, which is less than two miles from Ocean Beach and has a knowledgeable staff who can point you to the best tacos in town.

New Orleans, LA

There’s probably no place better than New Orleans to beat the winter blues. Everything about this city on the perpetually warm Gulf Coast is festive – the fantastic food, the vibrant live music culture, and of course, Mardis Gras. You can spend a few blissful days in February celebrating one of the greatest parties on the planet, but be sure to leave time to explore NOLA’s neighborhoods for some underrated discoveries too.

Where to stay: You’ll be able to stay crazy close to the French Quarter at the brand new HI New Orleans hostel, which will be open just in time for Mardis Gras 2019.

Sacramento, CA

California’s capital is often an overlooked and underrated destination, but when the weather is bad everywhere else, you can pretty much count on sunny skies in Sacramento. Bike along the American River Trail for quality outside time, and explore historic sights and museums for a little Gold Rush fever. Then go full foodie and sample fresh farm-to-table food and local wine, microbrews, and coffee in the bustling downtown.

Where to stay: HI Sacramento is within walking and biking distance from some of the best the city has to offer, and it’s housed in a gorgeous Victorian mansion!

Austin, TX

Go bike riding along Lady Bird Lake or try stand-up paddle boarding if you’re looking to maximize your outside-in-nature time. Otherwise, take a DIY mural tour in the South Congress neighborhood, then hunt down all the tacos and barbecue you can eat.

Where to stay: HI Austin hostel is right on the shores of Lady Bird Lake and also has bikes you can rent to go exploring.
