As summer winds down and we cruise into fall here at the HI Chicago hostel, we look forward to a break in the humidity and cool, crisp air. It’s a great time to be in Chicago and we have a few suggestions for how to make the most of it.
Fall Colors in Lincoln Park – 2001 N Clark St (Lincoln Park)
Walk around Chicago’s largest park, take in the beautiful changing leaves, stop by Lincoln Park Zoo (free & open 365 days/year,) the Lincoln Park Conservatory or the Peggy Notebeart Nature Museum. Stop by Café Brauer for a bite to eat.
Oktoberfest - 50 W Washington (Loop) - September 23-25
Named one of the Best Oktoberfests by USA Today and Gayot.com, this celebration of German music, food, beer, and culture is a great way to close out summer. Get some exercise in the Brat Trot 5K then enjoy brats and craft brews all weekend. Lederhosen optional, but encouraged.
Chicago International Film Festival
We love the Chicago International Film Festival because like us, the organization that runs the festival, Cinema/Chicago, is dedicated to fostering better communication between people of diverse cultures. The Festival runs October 13-27 with a variety of films playing around the city. Check at the hostel info desk for the schedule of movie showings and buy your tickets early. Popular showings often sell out.
Logan Square Farmer’s Market – 2755 N Milwaukee Ave (Logan Square)
Heralded as one of the best in the city, the Logan Square Farmer’s Market runs year round and is outside until October 30th! If it gets too chilly, warm up around the corner at The Rocking Horse (2535 N Milwaukee Ave) with delicious burgers and arcade games.
Christkindlmarket – 50 W Washington (Loop)
Chicago’s version of a traditional German Christmas Market is open daily from November 18 to December 24th.
