Our Cultural Kitchen program gives middle and high school students an opportunity to learn about other countries and cultures in a fun and innovative way. The program is a two part process that teaches participants about hostelling, identifying cultural norms, and respecting other cultures. Students study various aspects of a selected country, including the cuisine. They work as a team to prepare a meal and an interactive presentation at the hostel in Austin or at a local community center.
The Cultural Kitchen curriculum is standards-based and qualifies as a Service Learning experience for participants. Cultural learning exercises foster interest in cultural understanding, strengthen group communication skills, and teach students to explore the world and to appreciate the people in it. Students who complete the Cultural Kitchen program continue to demonstrate enthusiasm for learning about new cultures and approach the world and its people with more open minds.
If you are interested in having your youth group participate in the Cultural Kitchen program, please contact Chelsea Cates via email or call 512-444-2294.
Every first and third Monday of the month, HI Austin hosts a dinner and travel discussion for guests and Austinites alike. Each dinner we focus on a different continent and have food from that area of the world.
We host free travel classes on a variety of topics throughout the year. The classes are open to all. Please call 512-444-2294 for more information. To view upcoming classes please visit our calendar or Meetup group.
