HI USA wants to work with you on the issues that matter the most to you. Valued Voices is designed to allow participants a space to discuss topics that currently divide us with a goal of finding a common ground. Participants have an opportunity to explore an issue from various perspectives in a safe, engaging space.

HI USA's mission is to increase intercultural understanding through travel, which leads to greater tolerance. Within our own culture, there are issues that truly affect us; issues that we believe could help to solve if we only knew where to begin. Through Valued Voices, HI USA provides an opportunity to discuss those issues in a purposeful way. Join us to learn more about these issues and share your thoughts and ideas for resolution.

Valued Voices - Recognizing and Responding to Microaggressions

FREE Professional Development

Microaggressions are defined as a comment or action that subtly, and possibly unintentionally, expresses a prejudice. Learn how to recognize microaggressions, identify what causes them and their effects, and practice meaningful ways to respond and decrease tension.

Friday
4pm - Networking Social
5pm - Light Discussion/Activity
7pm - Dinner followed by exploration of Downtown San Diego’s Gaslamp District
Dorm Overnight (Male, Female, Mixed Gender Options available. Privates available for a supplemental rate.)

Saturday
Breakfast
8:30am - Transportation to HI San Diego Point Loma
Discussion (lunch will be provided)
6pm - Return to HI San Diego Downtown
7pm - Community Dinner

Participants are welcome to stay at HI San Diego Downtown on Saturday night for a reduced rate.

Program Requirements

To be considered for a local Valued Voices program, candidates should have:

  • Reached the age of 18 prior to the program start date
  • A strong desire and motivation to learn from other people and cultures through open dialogue; open to a diversity of thought and experiences
  • An openness to sharing insights about your own experiences and a willingness to listen to the insights of others
  • An interest in the topic as it pertains to personal, academic and/or professional goals
  • An ability to participate in the full program (June 8 - June 9)

Please note - registration is limited to 25 participants

Participant Cancellations

Once a participant has accepted a spot in the Valued Voices program, they are expected to fully engage in the experience. If participants are unable to attend after registration, please email community.sandiego@hiusa.org in order to accommodate people on the waitlist.

Reservation of Rights

We reserve the right to modify this agreement and any policies of the HI USA Valued Voices Program. Modification is effective upon posting to our website or distribution via email or conventional mail.
