Before You Arrive

How to get to the hostel, our pet policy, how to have packages delivered, and more information you may need before you arrive.

Guests may receive packages at the hostel while they are checked in. No personal letters are accepted. The hostel may accept important documents such as passports before you check in, however you must notify the hostel in advance by emailing [email protected].

Bunk beds are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Please contact us in advance by emailing [email protected] if you have a strong preference for a top/lower bunk and we will do our best to accommodate you; however, please note that requests cannot be guaranteed. If booking on a third-party platform (OTA), please make your request using that OTA’s messaging feature.

From the SAC airport: take bus 42A (Intercity Clockwise), get off at J & 8th street, walk to hostel on corner of H & 10th street. Takes 20-25 minutes.

From SFO airport: we recommend taking Amtrak. We are located 5 blocks from the Sacramento Amtrak station.

There are also Greyhound buses available.

Pets are not permitted at any HI USA hostels. We do permit service animals as identified by ADA guidelines. At all times, service animals must be under the owner’s control and never left alone.

Limited gated parking is available onsite for $8 per night on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 3 p.m. Please see the Front Desk on your day of arrival for availability.

While You're at the Hostel

Answers to all your questions about on-site laundry, bathroom amenities, quiet hours, and more.

Quiet hours are from 10 p.m. – 7 a.m.

There are no curfew or lock-out hours, however all exterior doors are locked during quiet hours (10 p.m. – 7 a.m.). To gain building entry after 11 p.m., present your receipt to reception at the main entrance. Our front desk is open 24/7.

Unfortunately, we do not have guest laundry facilities available at this time. Our staff will be happy to direct you to the nearest local laundromat.

Please speak to someone at the Front Desk in person. We are pleased to match any publicly advertised online rate* for additional nights booked directly through us. While we strive to keep you in the same room/bed, this is based on availability at the time of your request. The sooner you can let us know you’d like to extend, the better. Please let us know no later than check-out time (in most cases, 11 a.m.) on the day of your scheduled check out.

*Offer applies only to newly added room nights and cannot be applied to existing reservations.

All lockers are 12 inches x 24 inches.

We encourage guests to bring their own locks. If you need a lock, you may purchase one at the hostel front desk.

The hostel is located in a historic 1800s mansion and has no elevator. If you are a wheelchair user, please contact the hostel directly to inquire about accommodations.

Hair dryers are available at the front desk; just ask our friendly staff and we’ll be happy to lend you one!

All towels and linens are included in the cost of your stay.

There is a locked shed on site for bicycle storage; staff can assist you with access. There is also a bicycle rack available outside; please bring your own lock.

We are happy to store Powered Mobility Devices (PMDs) such as e-bikes, scooters, or e-skateboards/hoverboards during your stay. Note that we do have several rules in place for the safety of our staff and guests.

  • We can only store devices with a holographic sticker confirming they comply with UL (Underwriters Laboratories) Certification or EN 15194 Certification (Conformité Européenne).
  • PMDs may not be charged inside the hostel building.
  • PMDs may only be in designated zones of the hostel, and never in guest rooms.
  • Batteries must remain attached to PMDs at all times while on the hostel premises. Batteries are not allowed in guest rooms.

If you have questions about any of these policies, please contact us directly in advance of your stay at [email protected].

We have two private rooms available with ensuite bathrooms; you’ll need to specifically book one of those rooms if you want a private bathroom. All other rooms share gender-specific hallway bathrooms, each with multiple individual stalls for toilets and showers.

While HI USA classifies some shared spaces as men’s, women’s, or mixed, we want everyone of all gender identities to feel comfortable utilizing the spaces that are consistent with their gender identity or expression.

The maximum length of stay is 14 nights in a calendar year.

We do not offer hostel-run tours at this time. We recommend checking out one of our local tour partners to make the most of your visit to Sacramento!

The hostel has free, reliable WiFi that extends throughout the property including dorm and private rooms, common areas, and our outdoor courtyard and covered porch. You’re welcome to work from any of our comfortable shared guest spaces, but please be aware that the only way to ensure privacy should you require it is to book a private room.

Minors traveling with a parent or legal guardian are welcome at all HI USA hostels. While we encourage guardians traveling with children to book private rooms for their comfort, we do allow minors in dorm rooms.

For safety reasons, children over 2 years old must have their own bunk bed in dorm rooms, and children under 7 may not sleep in top bunks. Emancipated minors traveling on their own, or other minors traveling alone with parental or guardian consent, should contact the hostel directly for more information on policies and booking instructions.

The hostel is located in the historic heart of downtown Sacramento. You can easily walk from the hostel to K Street, the State Capitol, and the Golden 1 Center. While we operate a secure building and our neighborhood is generally considered quite safe, it’s important to keep in mind that many American cities are currently experiencing a homelessness crisis that can be very visible to both locals and visitors. We ask that guests remain compassionate if and when they encounter any neighbors experiencing homelessness, and talk to our staff if any concerns arise.
